Mean free path for S-wave scattering under central Greece

I. Baskoutas, K. Makropoulos and H. Sato

Abstract:

The mean free path characterizing the scale of inhomogeneity of tbc carth medium was measured from coda waves of local carthquakes. Coda waves are interpreted as scattered S-waves due to random inhornogeneities in tbc carth medium. Wc analysed short period WWSSN seismograms of 55 local earthquakes in tbc magnitude range 3.8-5.2 recorded at tbc ATH station in Athens during tbc period 1982-1985. Applying tbc singie isotropic scattering inodel to tbc data, wc estirnated the mean free path of S-waves under central Greece to be 89.1 km, which corresponds to a scattering coefficient of 0.01 km-1.
