A new method for measuring thermal conductivity of rocks: the "sandwich method", dirst results

F. Mongelli

Abstract:

A new method for rock thermal conductivity measurement is proposed. A constant power flat source heats a sandwiched pair of rock disks and the temperature differences across the specimens are measured in the steady state. Replication the experiment with a set of disk pairs of different thicknesses allows the effect of contact thermal resistance to be eliminated. The method strongly reduces lateral heat losses.
