Abstract:
The present-day principal stress directions in the L\\\' Aquila region, Abruzzo, compatible at the same time with the joint orientations as derived from the stream patterns, and with the polarity of the on-sets produced by local seismological events is of subvertical maximum compression, NNE-SSW intermediate, and WNW -ESE minimum compression. Such stresses cannot have been responsible for the formation of the generally ENE-directed Apennine overthrusts. The geological maps of the area display shapes which may be the result of interference resulting from the refolding of the layering during inhomogeneous shear along moderately steep NE-trending surfaces, perhaps related to the instability suggested by the gravimetric data.
