Neotectonic activity and seismic hazard in central Greece

Abstract:

A linear source model based on new information from recently developed neotectonic data for the western part of the Gulf of Corinth is proposed for the assessment of seismic hazard. The model considers two major line sources in the submarine area of the gulf with notable neotectonic activity and well documented seismicity, and three minor line sources onshore. The regional seismic hazard is estimated by applying the fault rupture model; the most important feature of the model is the recognition of the rupture length as the most significant parameter in the probabilistic calculation of seismic hazard. The results identify the highest acceleration in the central part of the gulf, between the cities of Aigion and Eratini, and it decreases strongly in the N-W direction, and slowly perpendicular to that, following the prevailing orientation of tectonism in the gulf.
