Abstract:
Current knowledge on the seismicity of the Adriatic region is given. Historical and instrumental data support the idea that the Adria microplate is an almost rigid block with strong activity at the margins. The few earthquakes which have occurred in the sea represent the common intra-plate seismicity, with the exception of some medium magnitude events in the lower central Adriatic sea which are interpreted differently from the seismotectonic point of view. In addition, the present - day seismicity of the most northern sector of the region is investigated in detail and confirms the evidence for transpressive activity on the Dinaric front.
